夏休み、大学の寮は閑散としている。今使われているのはこの棟の上の部分だけだ。
午前、新聞を読むのを最近サボっていたので１週間半分まとめて読むことにした。部屋にテレビがないので、
せめて新聞だけでも読んでいないと情報がまったく入って来ないのだ。３日分読み終わったところで、
サブウェイのハージットさんから電話がある。
「マキ、今日はバイト入ってないよな？」
「確か入っていたはずですが．．．」
「そうか、今日は働かなくてもいいよ！昨日たくさん働いてくれたからな」
ラッキー！急に緊張感がほぐれる。しかし、これはつかの間の幸せだった。１０分後、又ハージットさんから電話が。
「マキ、まだ今日働く気あるか？」
「別にいいっすよ」
僕は日本人だなとつくづく思った。ハージットさんもひどいよ、期待させといてさ。
２時半から３回目のバイト。実はこのバイト先、僕が唯一の日本人ではない。他にエリさんというお方もいるのだ。
今日はそのエリさんと初めて一緒に仕事をすることに。普段日本語をしゃべる機会がまったくなかった僕にとって、仕事が
日本語でできる喜びに今日は浸ってしまった。彼女はまだ働き始めてから３ヶ月らしいが、完璧に仕事ができていて、
尊敬の念を抱いた。今日の休憩時間は、１２インチのシーフードクラブサンドイッチを自分でアレンジして食べる。はやり
自分で作ったサンドイッチはグッとうまいな。なんちゃって。このバイトの おかげで最近よく野菜にありつける。あと晩飯代
も浮く（笑）。ありがとう、サブちゃん！
明日は日帰りでロンドンまで行って来る。天気が良ければいいのだが。
Uni is very quiet these days, only the top floors of this building are being used at the moment.
In the morning, as I was slacking on reading newspapers, I decided to read all the past ones and catch up.
Reading newspaper is very important for me - not having TV in my room, it's my only source of information.
Having read three days worth of papers, I got a call from Harjit, again.
'say maki, you're not working today are you?'
'yes I am, from 2:30'
'okay, you don't have to work today coz you worked enough yesterday okay?'
fine with me, could catch up with newspapers and got my whole day free! Relieved I was! But my joy couldn't
last much long. 10 minutes later Harjit called me again.
'say maki, do you still wanna work today?'
'sure, no problem' Japanese can't say no, it's famous.
Start working from 2:30. Actually, I'm not the only Japanese working at this store. There's another girl called
Eri who has been living in UK for over two years and been working at this subway for about 3months. It felt so
funny today, coz I haven't had any opportunity to even speak in Japanese in everyday life, today I was able to
'work' in Japanese. My break time sandwich for today was sea-food and crab which I customised to my
own taste. It sure was good. Thanks to this subway, I'm eating lots of veggies these days and saving up money
on dinner as well ! Go subway go!
Going to London tomorrow, hope the weather is nice, that's all I hope.
