I was studying
trigonometry (don't ask me why) when I got a call from Hajit, the
manager at Subway.
He said
whether I wanted to work today. I didn't really feel like working
today, or to be more precise to the
question, no I
didn't want to work today but as I
coudn't think of any good excuse in such a short time, I
accepted the
offer. I left my house at two, feeling a bit nervous, thinking
what
sort of job I will be doing today.
On arriving,
Harjit asked me to practise cutting some breads, which he had already
prepared six of them on a
table.
First, Harjit demonstrated
by cutting two breads. 'the point of this is to slice the bread
in 45 degrees'
Harjit
said. Then my turn; Harjit had to admit that it was
perfect, 'hahar' I thought, although it was sheer luck.
But this
wasn't lucky thing at all, as when I finished cutting the second bread,
he asked me to try making some
sandwiches. Sandwiches! I've
only cut two breads! Harjit is one of those very pragmatic types
of
people.
I felt like
thrown into a very deep valley or something.
Confronting
with a customer a meter away from me, I stood, knowing nothing what to
say. With a trembling
voice, I asked
Harjit,
'what am I
suppose to do?'
'Ask him if he
wants some cheese'
' Would you
like some cheese sir?' I just reiterated.
Then again, I
stood, looking at Harjit who was busy with his own customer.
'Harrjit...
customer is waiting...'
'Ask him if he
wants some onions or lettuce'
'Would you
like some onions or lettuce sir?' the customer apparently
overheard all of our conversation, but
anyway I
asked.
Probably
at this stage, this being Japan, there would be one or two big yelling
and shouting from a customer
but
surprisingly, the UK customers were very very, should I say,
magnanimous. I must admit
that, having
grumbled
and complained against the often horrible customer
service in UK, today I decided to become a bit
more
patient and
generous when I'm being served.
Worked
from 2:30 to 9:30. I thought sandwich making is not bad at all,
after all!
