大学のすぐ脇にウェスト・ミッドランド州管轄の消防署本部がある。
その建物の片面に、酒屋、フィッシュアンド・チップスなど大学生をターゲットにした店がたくさん立ち並ぶ。
その中で、「アストン・ミニ・マーケット」は一世を風靡している。
アストン大学の卒業生と話すと必ず、「あの店まだあるの？」と話題に上がるほどの人気振りで
ここの店長兄弟は大学長よりも有名人なこと間違いなし。
僕もリンゴやお菓子をちょっと買いによく行くが、愛想のとてもいいおっちゃんが
「ユー・オッケー・マーン？」とか言って気軽に声を掛けてくる。
たまにリンゴを買わなかったりすると、「ノー・アップル？カモーン!」とか言って無理に買わされたりする。
日本の「いらっしゃいませー」とはまた一味違った、カスタマー・サービスなんだ。
The West Midlands Fire Station stands right next to the university.
In one side of this building, there are varius shops targeted at students, such as fish and chips, off-license etc.
Among these shops, "Aston Mini Market" definitely wields an enourmous power.
This shop is so popular that everytime I speak to an aston graduate, he/she would anxiously ask "is that shop still there?".
It is evidently true that the owner of this shop is more famous than the Chancellor of the Aston University.
I myself often go buy some apples and snacks and he greets me by saying "hey, you okkay man?"
When I don't buy any apples, he goes "No apple? Come on man it's fresh" and forces me into purchase.
It's a different style of customer service compare to Japan, but I certainly like it (and it's very effective...).
